This chapter considers the proliferation of digital media technologies, which, on the one hand, proposes the dissolution of the subject while, on the other, provides new opportunities for discovering, sharing and improving one’s inner Self. It examines the decline in symbolic efficiency, postmodern aversion to grand narratives and ideological authority, and the ways social media both disavows and depends upon selection, composition and editing. It argues that digital platforms render a version of the Self visible, offering both promise and peril.
